Join us as a volunteer

Volunteers are at the heart of our organisation. Without them, our working groups and a lot of our projects wouldn’t even exist. So, no need to say we appreciate our volunteers more than anything.

Being a volunteer at Open Knowledge Belgium comes with a lot of advantages. You make the world a better (read as: more open) place, you get to meet people with different backgrounds, technical and non-technical and we help you develop your skills based on your needs or provide the network to get your message across.

You can get involved in Open Knowledge Belgium on different levels. From supporting our message across the internet to determining the strategic outlines of our organisation in our board of directors.

  • Level 1: Join the stream

Want to keep up with what’s happening in the Belgian Open Knowledge field? Have a question about an Open Knowledge topic? Or do you want to help us answer questions that people have on Open Knowledge? You can join our mailing list or follow us on Twitter.

  • Level 2: Join the volunteering team

You want to help us out now and then? We’re searching for volunteers with all sorts of skills. Want to code during one of our hackdays? Help us with practical tasks during our events? Help us create online presences for our projects? Or join one of our advisory boards? Mail us, tell us what you’re good at, what you’d like to do and learn and we will match you with the perfect project. You can take a look at our current projects for yourself.

  • Level 3: Join a working group

Our working groups are completely managed by volunteers and they would be happy to have you on their team. We have working groups on all kinds of subjects. If you’d like to join one, or if you’re looking for more information, you can simply click on the envelope beneath the working group of your choice.

  • Level 4: Start a working group

Convinced we need a new local working group on a certain Open Knowledge subject? You can set up a working group yourself and create your own community. Don’t worry about setting up an official non-profit, we have that covered for you so that you can focus on what matters.

  • Level 5: Join our board

Our board is the backbone of Open Knowledge Belgium. They take care of our continued existence and help to decide which way we should head to. If you wonder whether a function on our board would suit you, you’re free to attend on one of our general assemblies.

If you want to work as a volunteer on one or more of our projects you can mail dries at If you prefer working for one of our working groups, feel free to contact them directly.
